Depending on where you live along with the age and condition of your home you could be at risk for flooding in your home, even if it isn’t flooding outside. Tips to prevent basement flooding in your home:

Gutters & Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts play a critical role in keeping rainwater away from your home’s foundation. Make sure that your gutters are cleaned out every spring to make sure that the water has a clear path through instead of overflowing the gutter. Naturally, you downspouts should be pointed away from the house you then need to make sure that they water is draining far enough away from the foundation. Ideally you want storm water draining at least three feet from the base of the house. If your downspouts aren’t long enough go out and get extensions, troughs, or splash blocks.

Landscaping

Over time you landscaping wears down. Each year make sure that the landscaping surrounding your home is pitched away from the foundation. The slope of the soil should decline going away from the house. Ideally, try to get a grade of at least 1/4 inch per foot. To do this add soil and rake it downwards as you go away from the house. Foundation Cracks

Foundation cracks can be detrimental to your home’s basement. Make sure that you are checking the walls of your basement for any cracks or holes at least every spring. Sump Pump

If you have a below-grade sump pump, clear the well of debris and make sure that it is running properly. If you have a portable sump pump it needs to be placed in the lowest point of your basement and connected to a power source in order for it to work properly. If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a generator. Especially if you live in an area prone to storms and power outages, you need your sump pump to continue working even if the power is out.
