Signs You Need Replacement Gutters
A gutter system is the metal halfpipe running around the perimeter of your roof. Its purpose is to channel rainwater and snowmelt from the roof to a safe distance away from your home. If water were to just run right off the roof and onto the ground close to the base of your house, it would cause severe damage to the landscaping and the foundation of the home.
Most gutter systems will last between twenty and fifty years, depending on the quality of the installation, maintenance, and metal type. That being said, when water is running through a guttering system problems can arise that can lead to the need for replacement gutters.
There are several different signs to look for, but they can each be separated into two categories:
- Obvious physical damage to your gutters
- Water is found in places where it shouldn’t be
If your gutters are pulling away from your house or sagging in certain areas, this can be a significant issue and will require immediate gutter replacement. These issues are evidence that water has been seeping into the part of your house where the gutter system is supposed to be anchored in and that your gutter channel is not angled correctly. Both of these issues will only get worse and become a bigger headache the longer you wait to pull the trigger on replacing your gutters.
Basement flooding and water damaged landscaping could be signs of major gutter malfunction and a great reason for immediate replacement gutters. The very purpose of a gutter system is to prevent water from running off of your house and pooling right by your outer walls. This water can and will destroy your landscaping and cause basement flooding or worse damage to the foundation of your home without you even knowing it!
It’s important to be on the lookout for gutter damage and be proactive about solving problems before they lead to bigger problems. It’s much easier to pay for a gutter replacement, and much more difficult to have to pay for water damage restoration for damage to the foundation of your home later on.
