4 Spring Roof Maintenance Tips

Spring Roof MaintenanceThe snow is melting, the sun is shining and Spring is in the air. For many homeowners that means spring cleaning is right around the corner. When thinking of spring cleaning, do you think about the exterior of your home? Mainly your roof? If not, you are not alone. Many homeowners cannot wait to throw open the windows and clean the house, but forget to check the roof. So here is your short and sweet list of what to look for when completing Spring Roof Maintenance:

  1. Check Gutters & Downspouts – Are gutters or downspouts lose, leaking, or blocked? When gutters are not working correctly, water can drain into your basement. This drainage can cause water damage and structural damage to your foundation over time. Gutters that cannot drain properly can also damage fascia boards due to the weight and strain.
  2. Look for Damaged, Loose or Missing Shingles – Shingles take a beating all year round. After winter is over, it is important to replace any missing or damaged shingles in order to prepare for the upcoming storms and protect your home from the top down. If you see shingles that are buckling or curling, this is an indication that your roof is at the end of its life expectancy.
  3. Check Flashings – The flashings around vents, plumbing and chimneys need to be checked for damage. This is another place water can get into your home and cause damage.
  4. Check the Attic – You will be looking for any signs of light coming in from outside. Look for water damage indicating a leak.

When doing any maintenance on the roof, always think safety first. Place your ladder on solid, level ground and ensure that the ladder will not slip. Watch where you step and take your time to ensure your inspection is done carefully and thoroughly.

Make doing basic spring maintenance on your roof a part of spring cleaning. Not only will roof maintenance give you peace of mind, it could save you money on major roof repairs or even water damage in the future.
